XL Hybrids Receives Industry-First Executive Order from California Air Resources Board for Plug-in Hybrid Ford F-150’s
PHEV Ford pickup trucks join other Ford and General Motors vans and trucks in XL Hybrids’ vehicle lineup with CARB approval
BOSTON, January 8, 2018 – XL Hybrids, Inc. the leader in connected fleet electrification solutions for commercial and municipal fleets, today announced it has received approval to sell the plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) Ford F-150 pickup trucks in California – an industry first. The Company announced it has received an executive order from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for Ford F-150’s with 2.7L gasoline engines.
In fact, XL has the most number of executive orders for aftermarket vehicle electrification in the fleet industry. In addition to PHEV F-150s, XL also offer hybrid-electric (HEV) systems for certain model year Ford Transit vans, GM vans and cutaways, and Ford E-Series cutaways.

XL was the first company in the fleet industry to receive a CARB executive order for aftermarket electrification, when XL secured it for the XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System for General Motors cargo vans and wagons a few years ago. Since then XL has successfully CARB-tested more makes and models, including most recently PHEV F-150s. And fleets – in California and throughout the U.S. – find these solutions attractive for many reasons. XLs technology makes financial sense. The technology is installed in less than a day. The OEM warranty stays intact. And the cost savings are very real, with fuel economy improvements of 25 percent for HEVs and 50 percent for PHEVs, on average.
Installation of the XLP PHEV system can be completed in just hours on half-ton pickup trucks as a Ford ship-thru upfit. Featuring a volume-production ready high voltage lithium battery pack, XLP will accommodate full charging overnight with Level 1 and less than three hours for Level 2 charging using an industry-standard J1772 plug interface. The XLP technology leaves the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) engine, transmission, fuel system and exhaust system completely intact. Fleets will maintain the complete OEM warranty, and get a three-year, 75,000 mile warranty from XL Hybrids on the XLP powertrain. The XLP system will have no special maintenance requirements.
XLP will also include the XL Link™ cloud-based big data analytics system, which measures MPG performance and reports carbon dioxide emissions reductions. The proprietary XL Link vehicle connectivity is a continuous data link from every vehicle, collecting millions of operational data points, allowing analysis and reports on key performance indicators.
